Start a Starlink Mini setup by checking three things: the sky above the dish, the app's alignment prompts, and the connection between your device, Mini and the internet. Work through these checks before changing several accessories at once.

1. Prepare the Mini setup you will actually use
Download the Starlink app and open the Mini instructions for your hardware. Mini includes its own Wi-Fi router, so a separate router is not needed for a basic connection. Have the support and power equipment for your chosen setup available; another Starlink kit may use a different cable arrangement.
Not sure which hardware you have? Use the Starlink model identification guide. For battery output and cables, follow the separate Mini power and USB-C guide.

2. Check for obstructions at the planned location and height
Before installing permanently, use the Starlink app's obstruction-checking tool. Select the correct hardware and hold your phone at the planned dish location and height while following the scan prompts. Trees, poles and buildings can block the sky view the dish needs.
Compare possible positions before choosing a mount location. A scan from a convenient standing position does not assess a dish placed lower down, beside a wall or under a roof edge. Repeat the scan where you intend to put Mini.
| Check | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Phone scan before installation | Helps assess the sky view from the position and height you scan. |
| Obstruction map after Mini is online | Develops from the dish's actual satellite connections over time. Review it when assessing the chosen location. |
The later map does not replace checking the proposed location before installation.

3. Set up the support and follow the alignment tool
Use Mini's kickstand or the mount intended for your installation, following its instructions. For the supplied power connection, insert the plug completely so its face sits flush with the surface.
Mini uses the app's alignment guidance. Follow the displayed prompts when adjusting its position, including any misalignment alert. An obstruction check assesses the available sky view; alignment guides the direction Mini should face. Work through both checks.

4. Join Mini's Wi-Fi and check the internet connection
For initial setup, find the STARLINK network in your device's Wi-Fi settings. Use the Starlink app to set your network name and password, then review the connection and settings.
If performance differs between locations, the app's Advanced Speed Test can help separate the device-to-router connection from the router-to-internet connection. Walls, metal and distance can affect the local Wi-Fi link. Identify which connection needs attention before assuming the dish needs moving.

5. Use the app status to choose the next check
Separate two starting points: your device cannot join Mini's Wi-Fi, or it has joined Wi-Fi but internet access is unavailable. Read the app's exact status and follow the instructions for that message. Different offline messages lead to different troubleshooting steps.
Recheck the sky view, alignment and secure power connections against the setup instructions. Starlink's initial-setup guidance also describes rebooting equipment that remains offline, followed by the app's status-specific guidance.

Once online, review the developing obstruction map. Blocked satellites can still cause interruptions; waiting for the map to develop does not make every obstructed position reliable. Follow the app's guidance and seek a clearer view where needed.

6. Keep a short setup record before your trip
FPVtosky recommends trying the complete setup before relying on it during travel. Record the location, mount, power source, cable and app status. Change one thing at a time when comparing positions.
- Did you scan at the intended dish location and height?
- Does the support match your installation?
- Have you followed the app's alignment prompts?
- Can your device join the intended Wi-Fi network?
- What exact status or error does the app report?
- Have you checked the later obstruction map after operation?
Use these observations to choose your next check or describe the issue to Starlink support. For the next stop, follow the Mini travel packing checklist and case storage layout checks.
